The Creative One

Yesterday, I talked about how I am missing the creative gene.

You know who's not missing it? Shannon.

She already knows what she wants to be when she grows up. She wants to be a professional photographer. She took beginning photography last semester (first semester of freshman year), and now she's in intermediate photography. She's also taking a drawing class.

Next comes advanced photography, next year...which somehow involves having your own digital camera with manual controls. A Sony Cybershot point and shoot will not work in this situation. Send money please!

Right now they are using film cameras. As in, cameras that still use film. Did you know those even still existed? Well, they do. In pawn shops. Which is where we got her a pretty nice Nikon. I don't know what we're going to do about next year. Hopefully things will be looking up, financially speaking, by then.

Once again, I can't stay on topic. Today's picture is a photo of a mug that Shannon painted at a place called My Art Workshop. They have ceramic stuff you can paint, wooden stuff you can paint, mosaic stones, sand art, and other cool stuff. I found out about it when Kylie went there for a birthday party.

Shannon took this plain white ceramic mug, painted it gold, and free-handed a cherry blossom tree all over it. I was kind of amazed, and so were the people that worked there.

Do you think that left-handed people are just naturally more creative? That whole, right brain, left brain thing? All I know is that she spent a good 90 minutes on this, and if the store wasn't closing, I'm sure it would have been longer. Color me jealous. I'd be lucky just to be able to paint the thing a solid color.

She has a talent. A gift. I applaude you for nurturing it! I love all kinds of artsy stuff too and was so happy that my mother let us run with it!

My lefty is also our most creative kid. I was kinda hoping to get another southpaw, but no such luck.

For the camera, see if you can score a refurbished one. Lots cheaper! Good that you know now that she needs to save up for it. Better than a surprise.

So thats why I'm not good at being crafty! It's because I'm right handed!
Start saving for that camera. Maybe they will give a student discount for the camera like they do for the computer classes. Mine does anyway.

Wow! Way too pretty to drink coffee! I'd have it sitting with pretty daisies in it.

I've always wished I was left handed.

That is gorgeous.

It's so weird when your kids have gifts that you cannot fathom. I have one kid with a chemistry degree and another majoring in wildlife biology. Me an science? Not a match at all.

That truly is a work of art. What a talent.

I took my girls to the pottery store over winter break. They all made lovely things, (not as exquisite as that, but lovely). I, too, am not artistic in any way. I decided my coffee cup would be simple with big polka dots. My niece walked in late and told me how cute it was for me to put the girl's thumbprints all over my cup. I can't even do circles! We just got our pottery back. My cup truly looks as if a 4 year old painted it. I am amused and horrified every time I drink my coffee out of it.

I know what you mean about the camera. My daughter, too, needed a special one for photography. Luckily, we had one and now it's been passed down through numerous friends and soon, her sister will get her turn with it. It's been put to good work. My girl started out loving photography and is now at college pursuing film. It's wonderful to see them blossom like that.

Really pretty mug! Unfortunately having used both a low end digital camera and one the manuals I can tell you there is a big difference especially for people learning about photography. I recommend having her get a job to save up for the camera herself - or at least chip in with you halfway.
